Getting Around Dubai by Boat

Dubai Abras An easier form of crossing Dubai Creek is by abras, which are traditional water-taxis akin to Venetian Gondolas with small motors affixed. Abra stations are situated along the creek on both the Deira and Bur Dubai sides. The cost of the service is just Dhs. 0.50-1.50 (US$ 0.15-0-50), payable to the driver after the wooden barge has left the station. This service is available round-the-clock between 6 am and 12 pm.

There are two main routes. The first route runs between Bur Dubai Abra Dock and Deira Old Souk Abra Dock (near to the mouth of the creek), while the other runs between Dubai Old Souk Abra Dock and Sabkha Abra Dock.

Abras are also an excellent way to experience the magic of ancient Dubai through picturesque view of the city. For a negotiable fee, generally around Dhs. 50 (US$ 14) per hour, tourists can rent out a whole abra. Visitors can enjoy the exceptional architecture of the creek skyline by day, splendid sunsets and amazing lights on the watercourse at night.

Numerous luxury boats are also offered in the creek. These boats provide comfortable and logically more expensive tours, in ferries designed to resemble the antique abras. The cost of the service usually includes dinner with on-board entertainment.

Note that

  • Abras have sailed in Dubai for centuries, and illustrations of them when they were still driven by oars can be found in various heritage sites of the city. Nowadays, ropes are attached to the rudder from the driverís seat and passengers sit on a small bench attached to the middle of the boat under a large shade canopy.
